A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a street sweeper truck in Toronto.

A pedestrian was killed early Tuesday morning when he was hit by a City of Toronto street sweeper truck.

Police responded to reports of a collision in the area of Lawrence and Leslie after 9 am.

Police say that an 85-year-old woman was struck by a street sweeper as she walked east along Tremont Crescent.

The woman sustained fatal injuries from the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of a vehicle involved in the crash, a 39-year-old man, was taken to hospital after remaining at the scene.

“The driver of the vehicle was very shaken from the collision, and as a result is currently awaiting medical care at the hospital,” Inspector Jeff Bassingthwaite told reporters at the scene.

It’s unclear if the truck was cleaning the street at the time of the collision.

The City of Toronto says it has “cooperated fully” with the police and their investigation, adding that “any residents that observe any suspicious activity or events, please share them with police.”

“It’s important for now to focus on the victims and their families;” a city spokesperson stated in a statement. “We also want our resident to know that we are here to support them.”

The police are asking any information they can get, including security footage and dashcam footage. They can be contacted at 416-808-1900 or anonymously at 416-222-8477.
